Cenergistic

Organizations that want to optimize their energy use work with Cenergistic, a Texas company that asked us to redesign its energy conservation website. It works with schools, universities, hospitals and commercial and industrial clients. Its story began with a school district’s air conditioning project in Wichita Falls, Texas. That project led to the founding of Energy Education, the company that later became Cenergistic. Today its Energy Specialists work on site alongside client teams. Its own energy management software, including Cenergistic Executive, GreenX, Simulate and Measure, helps those clients track their savings.

  • CMS: WordPress
  • Theme: Hello Elementor with a child theme
  • Builder: Elementor and Elementor Pro
  • Integrations: JetEngine, Gravity Forms with an advanced phone field add-on, Yoast SEO and our own custom Elementor plugin
  • Live site: cenergistic.com

Before:

On its previous WordPress site, Cenergistic already built in Elementor and Elementor Pro, with the Hello Elementor theme. It also leaned on several third-party add-on packs. Its content already included press releases, white papers, case studies and blog posts.

Cenergistic wanted a new design. One look had to carry an about page, four industries, four software products, case studies and the blog. The new design asked for a video player and a scroll section that no stock widget could build. That player had to take clips from more than one host. The scroll section had to change the software lineup product by product beside a pinned image.

What we did:

Cenergistic, a Texas energy conservation company, traded the add-on packs on its old Elementor Pro site for new templates and a custom plugin. Reaching for one more add-on pack would only have made the old stack bigger.

Building the energy conservation website on templates

We started with the homepage, then built the templates the rest of the site runs on. The industry pages for healthcare, K-12 education, higher education, and commercial and industrial clients share one layout. Each software product, case study and blog post has a template of its own. When the team adds a new page, it drops straight into the right design. In all we delivered the homepage, 13 templates and 11 template pages. We also moved the existing content across into the new build.

A custom Elementor plugin in place of add-on packs

The plugin starts with a share bar for blog posts. Readers can pass an article on to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, WhatsApp or Pinterest. The team picks each icon from a list in the editor, which also offers email and print.

The second widget is a video player whose items come from a JetEngine listing. It handles YouTube, Vimeo and self-hosted MP4 files. Each one can play in the page or open in a lightbox. On phones, visitors swipe from one video to the next. Because the videos sit in the listing, adding one is a content entry, not a layout edit.

For the software lineup we wrote a scroll script, which runs on the homepage and the technology page. With our own code covering these custom parts, we took the old add-on packs off. None of them load on the live site today.

Same slugs for press releases and white papers

We built the new site on the same domain the company already used. Press releases and white papers kept their slugs, and we brought each page’s title and meta description across. That meant switching the domain to the new build kept the SEO in place. Before launch, we tested every page on desktop, tablet and phone. Then the new energy conservation website went live. We white labeled this build for our partner BigDCreative. Our Checkout Bouncer WooCommerce plugin is another custom plugin we built, this one published free on WordPress.org.

Results:

  • 13 templates, with 11 pages built on them
  • All 4 industry pages run on a single layout
  • Add-on packs replaced by our own plugin and scroll script
  • YouTube, Vimeo and MP4 in one video player
  • Domain unchanged, with the old site's titles and meta descriptions brought in
